All in all, Bakersfield stretches 151 square miles, each of which is quite visually pleasing. Take a drive through this gorgeous city and you will have a blast. Though traffic has the potential to be fairly busy during rush hour.

Those who drive through Bakersfield are quick to testify to the merits of its natural beauty that ultimately makes getting out of the house quite rewarding. Positioned by the southern portion of the San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield boasts a population of nearly 400,000. This figure is likely to continue to grow in the years ahead as Bakersfield's economy is thriving.

History of Bakersfield

Bakersfield's history dates back to its early Native American settlers. Rewind time thousands of years into the past and you would find Native American settlements throughout what we now refer to as modern day Bakersfield. When the Spanish arrived at this part of California, Bakersfield was inhabited by a Yokuts tribe known as the Yowlumne.

These natives resided in lodges by the Kern River delta. The Yokuts hunted a wide array of animals ranging from game birds to bear, deer, fish, tule elk and antelope. The first-ever European to visit the area was the famous Spanish missionary known as Francisco Garces. Garces found his way to the Yokuts village by the Kern River slightly to the north of Bakersfield.

However, the Yokuts were primarily isolated from additional contact with outsiders all the way up until the end of the Mexican War of Independence. It is at this time when Mexican settlers started to move to the area now known as Bakersfield.

Fast forward to 1848 and Bakersfield received an influx of visitors during the state's famous gold rush. In fact, gold was discovered by the Kern River in 1851. Oil was found within the valley less than 20 years later.

An attorney named Thomas Baker, was drawn to the area during the gold rush. Baker migrated to the Kern River's banks in the late 19th century, living at what eventually became Baker's Field.

The area was officially incorporated in the form of a city in 1873 with its namesake stemming from the forementioned Baker.

People flock to this California city for economic opportunity and also because of its amazing weather. Visit Bakersfield in the winter, spring, summer or fall and you will find it has mild temperatures, few clouds in the sky and plenty of sunshine.

Only eight other cities in California have more residents than Bakersfield, largely because the city has emerged as a hub for energy production, agriculture and technology.

In fact, Kern County, where Bakersfield is located, produces more oil than any other county in the state of California. Additional local industries include mining, food processing, petroleum refining, natural gas.

Country music fans hold Bakersfield in high regard at is home of Bakersfield sound, a unique country music genre. This genre has remained popular as the years have gone by, proving it has staying power.

Geography of Bakersfield

Aside from amazing weather, a successful economy and beautiful natural features, Bakersfield is beloved for countless other reasons. Local highlights include nearly half a dozen sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Bakersfield Californian building.

Visitors and residents of Bakersfield alike are quick to tout t merits of the local geography. Within a short drive of the Sierra Nevada's southern tip and the San Joaquin Valley's horseshoe end, Bakersfield has something for everyone. In fact, the city's limits go all the way to the Sequoia National Forest by the Greenhorn Mountain Range.

Check out the Kern Canyon, the Tehachapi Mountains to the south that rise a mile into the air and Temblor Range to the west and you will agree they are a sight for sore eyes. In fact, Bakersfield is about 100 miles to the north of Los Angeles, meaning you can drive to and from these cities within two hours or less.

Hit the pavement, taking I-5 and State Route 99 and you will agree the drive is scenic, providing lasting memories that you will fondly recall in the years ahead. Bakersfield's climate is characterized by dry, warm summers and mild winters.

Though the nighttime hours have the potential to prove chilly in Bakersfield, this is the case with all cities that have a desert climate. Take a drive through the city and you won't have to worry about the skies opening up as Bakersfield averages a mere 6.5 inches of rain per year. The bulk of this rain falls in the winter months.

All in all, Bakersfield residents enjoy nearly 200 clear days each year, making the area perfect for growing all sorts of crops ranging from almonds to citrus fruits, carrots and more.
