History of Hayward
Hayward, the Heart of the Bay as it also is known, has played an important part as a port located in the Bay Area and Alameda County. The origin of the city’s name is debated, but most believe that has to do with the hotel that was built in 1852 during the California Gold Rush era by William Dutton Hayward. The town, originally known as “Hayward’s,” was eventually changed to “Haywards” when William Hayward became road commissioner for Alameda County. Finally, in 1910, the town’s name was changed to Hayward, and it has been ever since.
Hayward grew throughout the 19th century and had a strong economy that focused on agriculture. One of the most important early Hayward businesses was the Hunt Brothers Cannery, employing many of the town’s residents. It remained open until 1981. There was also a large salt company, known as Leslie Salt, that became one of the largest businesses in the Bay Area, also based out of Hayward.
Today, Hayward is largely known for its walking trails, parks, and golf courses. One of the oldest Japanese gardens in California, the Hayward Japanese Gardens, is located in Hayward. The many golf courses show off the unique natural features of Hayward and make it a challenge for any avid golfer. Hayward’s unique position in the Bay Area makes it a desirable place for both people and companies.
The city is also known for its pro-LGBTQ stance being one of the first cities in the United States to hold a prom, the Hayward Gay Prom, specifically for LGBT youth. The city has also been a Tree City USA since the mid-80s and symbolically recognizes itself as a nuclear-free zone. This means that there are no forms of nuclear weaponry or power within the city limits. Hayward is a very progressive city that prides itself on its acceptance and pushing its citizens and community to a better tomorrow.
