A Little About Sikeston, Missouri!

Sikeston is a small city in southeastern Missouri. It has a charming small-town feel, with some homes dating back to the Civil War era.

It has a central location that is within driving distance of many major U.S. cities.

Geography

The area that is now the city of Sikeston was originally a cypress swamp, but it was drained in the early 20th century to make it more liveable.

Today, Sikeston is situated on rolling prairies that are typical of the Midwest. The Sikeston Ridge is a topographical feature that sits just outside of the city and was formed thousands of years ago when rivers ran through the area.

The city is also part of the New Madrid seismic area. Sikeston has a very compact downtown area with rural suburbs.

Like many other parts of the Midwest, the area is prone to tornadoes and intense storms, especially during the spring and summer months.

The summer season is very long, hot, and humid. Despite the warm temperatures, the summer months tend to be partly cloudy. The winters are very cold with lots of rain and occasional snow.

The city is located just half an hour by car from the Illinois-Missouri border. St. Louis is just over two hours north by car, while Nashville, Tennessee is roughly three hours to the southeast.

History

The area where Sikeston is now was originally claimed by French explorers in the late 18th century, and was later ceded to Spain for a short period of time.

During this time, the Spanish colonies decided to build a road from New Orleans to St. Louis, which ran through the Sikeston area. In the early 19th century, the U.S. acquired the Sikeston area through the Louisiana Purchase.

Over a period of three months in 1811 and 1812, the area was struck by a series of intense earthquakes. This was very challenging for the settlers that had started migrating to the area after the Louisiana Purchase.

The land that would eventually become Sikeston was privately owned for many decades after the Louisiana Purchase until John Sikes purchased it and started planning the city.

This area was desirable because it sat at the intersection of a major road and a railroad, making it ideal for trade. During the Civil War, Sikeston was strategically very important because of its position on the highway.

Both Union and Confederate troops made their way through Sikeston at various points throughout the war, although neither of them ever stopped there. The city grew very quickly after the war because an early railroad terminated there.

In the 20th century, the town organized a local infantry company, which served in both World War I and World War II. The city also built a small airport in the 1930s.

The population continued to grow up until the 1990s, but has since slowly gotten smaller. While the city is connected to a large freight railroad network, there is no longer any passenger rail in the area.

Culture

Today, Sikeston is known for its low cost of living, making it attractive for families. Agriculture is a big part of the local economy, with a wide variety of farms in the surrounding areas. The city also operates its own power plant. Because it is located directly on two interstate highways, the city is an important stopping point on shipping routes.

While much of Sikeston now consists of new development, there is a small historic downtown area with cobblestone streets and historic homes. Some of these buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city also maintains several public parks and hosts year-round events for its citizens.

Sikeston has a long tradition of country music, and many country stars have performed at local rodeos over the years. The Sikeston Little Theater also hosts regular plays and concerts throughout the year. The city also hosts the Cotton Carnival and Parade, a tradition started as a homecoming for World War II veterans.

Additionally, sports are an important form of entertainment in Sikeston. The local high school is known for their football team, which is one of the most successful teams in Missouri and has recorded over 600 total victories. The VFW Stadium also hosts local baseball games. The nearby Sikeston Recreational Complex hosts tennis, soccer, and softball games as well. It also has a playground and fishing pond for local residents to enjoy.

Since Sikeston is very rural, most residents have their own car to get around. While there isn’t any local bus service, Greyhound does offer regional bus service to larger cities in the region.

Sikeston is a charming small town with a classic Midwestern feel. If you’re looking to sell your car in Sikeston, contact Cash For Cars today. Our friendly and knowledgeable local representatives will help you sell your car quickly and for the right price.
