A Little About Baton Rouge, Louisiana!

Baton Rouge, is the capital of Louisiana and one of the state's top draws in terms of tourism, education and business. As most sports fans know, Baton Rouge is home to Louisiana State University or LSU for short.

However, there is plenty to see and do in Baton Rouge aside from checking out LSU Tigers basketball, football and baseball games.

Geography

Located on the eastern side of the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is Louisiana's most populous parish. Louisiana has parishes as opposed to counties. Baton Rouge, which translates to "red stick" in English, is the United States 100th-most populous city.

Of all the cities in Louisiana, only New Orleans has more residents than Baton Rouge. In total, Baton Rouge has around 220,000 people. The entire Baton Rouge metropolitan area has more than 830,000 people.

As its name indicates, Baton Rouge has French historical roots. The city’s historical importance stems from its position on the first natural bluff that is upriver from the forementioned Mississippi River by the vast Gulf of Mexico.

This bluff made it that much easier to establish a living space that was not subjected to seasonal flooding. Take a drive through town, eat the local fare, participate in the city's cultural traditions and you will feel as though you are visiting an Americanized version of Europe.

In addition to French influence, Baton Rouge's culture is also shaped by Spanish and British culture. However, Baton Rouge is not strictly about sports, eating, live music and fun. The city's economy is surprisingly diverse with employers in the petrochemical industry, the medical industry and several other economic sectors including a budding tech segment.

As noted above, Baton Rouge is also home to the flagship university of the LSU system. In addition to LSU, Baton Rouge provides postsecondary learning opportunities at Southern University. Aside from LSU, the Port of Greater Baton Rouge is one of the area's top employers.

This port is consistently ranked in the top 10 of all the country's ports when measured by tonnage shipped.

Additional Baton Rouge employers include ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical Company, Marucci Sports, BBQGuys and the Lamar Advertising Company.

History

Historians agree people first inhabited the greater Baton Rouge area around the time period of 12000 to 6500 BC. This conclusion is made based on the analysis of the evidence on the Mississippi, Amite and Comite rivers.

Furthermore, earthwork-style mounds dating back to hunter-gatherers who lived in the fourth millennium BC have also been identified in the area. The locals living in Baton Rouge were disrupted by the arrival of the Spanish.

The Spaniards made their way to Baton Rouge in the early 1500s. At this point on the timeline, Baton Rouge was inhabited by chiefdoms and tribal groups.

The colonial period followed in which the area was named as Baton Rouge in reference to a red pole sunk by locals to designate the land line between the Bayagoula and Houma tribes. By 1721, Baton Rouge had been settled by Europeans.

Fast forward to the early 19th century and Baton Rouge was rapidly growing, largely as the result of the spike in trade and transportation made possible with steamboats. Baton Rouge was officially incorporated as a city in 1817.

The United States acquired the state of Louisiana 14 years prior to this incorporation. It is particularly interesting to note merely 5,500 individuals lived in Baton Rouge at the time of the Civil War.

The area’s petrochemical industry rapidly expanded in the 1950s, bringing that many more workers and residents to Baton Rouge.

The city really hit its stride in the 1990s and early aughts, becoming one of the country's fastest-growing cities in terms of business and technological advancement.

Though Baton Rouge is subjected to flooding and hurricanes, it is revered far and wide for its rich culture, budding educational institutions, and expanding economy. Furthermore, Baton Rouge is only an hour and a half away from New Orleans.

Drive through Baton Rouge in any of the four seasons and you will find the weather is fairly warm and humid with considerable rainfall yet there is no threat of snow, sleet, hail, or other inclement weather.

Culture

Locals enjoy fishing, live music, tasty southern culinary delights such as crawfish broils and the arts. Take a spin through town and you will find there are plenty of opportunities in terms of dining, cultural events, sports, live music, festivals and more.

Local highlights include the Shaw Center for the Arts where you will find the famous Brunner Gallery. Locals and visitors alike rave about the LSU Museum of Art, the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium, the Manship Theatre and the Baton Rouge Gallery.

If you are interested in checking out live theatre performances, be sure to check out Theatre Baton Rouge and Opera Louisiane.
