A Little About Fort Pierce, Florida!

In 1715, a Spanish fleet of treasure ships sunk off the coast of what is now St. Lucie County, Florida.

The seashores there have since been known as Treasure Coast, a coastline that is home to some of the oldest cities in The Sunshine State.

Fort Pierce is one of those cities. Nicknamed the Sunrise City, Fort Pierce is considered the sister city of San Francisco, also known as California’s Sunset City.

Fort Pierce is a port city that was founded in 1838. Named after Benjamin Pierce, a first commander in the United States army, the city served as a military supplies’ depot during the height of the Second Seminole War.

Before that, Fort Pierce had been established as an offshoot of Saint Lucia (St. Lucie), a county founded by Spanish explorers in 1565.

The history from there is both tragic and inspirational. Tragic in that the entire city burnt down in 1843, but inspirational in that it was rebuilt, better and stronger, as a village in 1901.

The railroads brought development to the city with new schools, stores, and a population boom in 1915. Fort Pierce has suffered and rebuilt time and again.

From a decline in 1988 to restored historic buildings and a revitalized Downtown area in 1994, the city has retained its charm and intrigue.

The Modern Stats and Weather Reports for Fort Pierce, FL

Fort Pierce is ranked as the 96th safest city in Florida, with a population of locals that rarely exceeds 48,000.

It’s a smaller city, one where many local families can trace their heritage back to generations of Fort Pierce natives.

Since Fort Pierce is close to the water, there’s always a tinge of cooling sea breeze in the air towards the coastlines.

On average, from April to August, the weather is warm and pleasant, with daytime highs of 82- to 91- degrees Fahrenheit and evening lows of 62- to 73- degrees Fahrenheit.

As for winter, it’s rare that Fort Pierce drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit for daytime temperatures and 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the evenings.

Because of its close proximity to the shorelines of the Atlantic Ocean, Fort Pierce is at high risk for annual hurricanes.

Since 1930, it’s been in the path of 80 hurricanes.

The one that devastated the city most was Hurricane Diana in 1984 with high winds of 115 miles per hour.

Where to Find Sweet Treats in Fort Pierce, FL

Dixie Cream Donuts serves up homemade donuts that could rival the glazed delights of Krispy Kreme.

This family-owned “hole in the wall” donut shop is a local treasure, with classic glazed donuts, chocolate-covered donuts, coffee cake donuts, and cream-filled donuts… to name a few.

The sweet treats are $1 per donut or $10 for a dozen. Uncle Carlos Gelato & Patisserie specializes in fruit gelatos, like homemade strawberry, cherry, and mango.

Their flavor selections change on a weekly basis, and if gelato isn’t what you want, there are homemade pastries and baked goods, like carrot cake.

Last but certainly not least, there’s Joy’s Ice Cream Plus. Their ice creams are homemade in a variety of flavors.

The Best Things to Do and See in Fort Pierce, FL

Historians love Fort Pierce and that’s an obvious fact at The Elliott Museum. There is something there for everyone.

Heathcote Botanical Gardens is nature in full bloom with acres of unique flower gardens, fruit trees, and herb gardens.

Visitors can also expect rainforest displays for educational purposes, as well as reflection pools with side benches to relax and rejuvenate in silence.

Near Christmas, the botanical gardens are laces with hundreds of thousands of sparkles, then called The Garden of Lights.

Sea cows are well-protected (and adorable), and this center is devoted to educating people on how to preserve and appreciate coastal wildlife.
