History of Tulsa
Tulsa has an interesting history dating back to 1836, where the Lochapoka and Creek tribes formally settled in the, known then as, the Indian Territory. The town was originally known as Tallasi, meaning “old town,” but over the years it turned into Tulsa. Most of Tulsa is still part of the Creek Nation today. The first major population boom happened in 1901 when significant amounts of oil were discovered and attracted entrepreneurs from all over the United States to immigrate to the Indian Territory for their chance at becoming rich. This earned Tulsa the nickname, the “Oil Capital of the World.”
In the early 1920s, the Greenwood neighborhood became known as “Black Wall Street” in Tulsa. It was one of the most prosperous black communities in the United States that was later destroyed in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the most violent racially motivated riots where a possible 300 people, mostly African American, were killed. Despite this, Tulsa rebuilt and become a prosperous part of Oklahoma once again.
Much like most of the south, food plays a huge part in Tulsa’s modern culture. BBQ is one of the most important parts of Tulsa’s offerings. Tulsa’s style balances influences from the south and the west and creates something unique. The most interesting addition to the pantheon of smoked meats is Tulsa’s famous smoked bologna. In addition to barbecued meats, Lebanese steakhouses are also a very unique part of Tulsa’s cuisine. Traditional steaks and chops are offered alongside Mediterranean dishes, such as hummus and tabbouleh.
Despite the dark events that happened early in Tulsa’s history, the city and its residents honor and recognize the tragedy that happened in 1921. This peaceful coexistence between three different races allows Tulsa to honor, remember, and grow as a community. Tulsa is a unique community that has taken influence from very different cultures to create something completely unique and truly Tulsan.
