One of the most important documents in vehicle ownership is the title. If it gets lost, stolen, damaged, or no longer has the correct information listed, you’ll need to apply for a correction or a replacement title.

North Carolina residents should follow these easy steps to getting a new title signed, sealed, and delivered.

First, what’s the difference between a corrected title and a replacement? You’ll be applying for a corrected title if you’ve legally changed your name, if there’s an error on your original title, or if you have significantly modified your car. If your title is missing or has been damaged, you’ll be applying for a replacement title.

Now, it’s time for the paperwork. You’ll have to complete the Application for Duplicate Title. You’ll need to have this document notarized, so make sure to have that set up. There is also a mandatory 15 day waiting period before the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles will issue you your new title.

If your original title showed a lien on the vehicle, you’ll also have to submit a Lien Release stating that you have satisfied the lien.

Once you’ve completed your application, you can head down to your local DMV office. There you can turn in your application and pay the $20.00 application fee. They will accept payment via cash, money order, personal check, Visa card, MasterCard, or Discover card.
