Car ownership comes with a lot of paperwork, and it can be easy to let some slip through the cracks. Especially if you’ve owned the vehicle for a long time. Some documents get lost, stolen, or are illegible. If this happens to your Montana vehicle title, you’ll have to apply for a replacement title. Here’s the quick steps you need to take in order to get your title:

First, fill out the Application for Replacement Certificate of Title. You can either print it out and fill it in by hand, or you can type in all of the information. This part is completely up to you!

If you are replacing your title because you have recently changed your name, you’ll have to also submit a copy of your Montana driver’s license with your new name for them to properly process your request.

Make sure all the information on your application is correct. You can face legal repercussions if you fraudulently filled out the form, or lied about being the legal owner of the vehicle.

There is a $10.00 processing fee for your new title, that you may pay via personal check. Make the check payable to “State of Montana”.

Once you’ve finished your application and written the check, you can mail if off to the following address:

Motor Vehicle Division Headquarters
Department of Justice
P.O. Box 201430
302 N Roberts
Helena, MT 59620-1430

As long as you filled everything out correctly, you’ll be on your way to being the proud owner of a brand new Montana title!
