If you’ve been looking into selling your car recently, you probably already know that you’ll need the vehicle’s title to do so. Unfortunately, that means dealing with the dreaded DMV.

The easiest way to get your duplicate title in Massachusetts is to order it online. Their website gives you step by step instructions along the way to make the process as painless as possible.

You can also obtain your duplicate title through the mail or in person if that would be preferable for you. First, you’ll need to complete the Duplicate Title Application. Be sure that you fill in all the necessary boxes and information, otherwise they won’t be able to issue you a new title.

If you previously had a lien on your vehicle, you’ll also need to send off a lienholder release letter, on original letterhead. They will also accept faxes from your former lienholder if they would prefer to handle it that way.

There is a $25.00 fee for receiving your duplicate title, which is payable by check or money order only.

If you choose to submit your application through the mail or in person, you’ll be the proud owner of a duplicate title for your vehicle in seven to ten business days. If you choose to apply online, you should receive your duplicate title in two business days. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles will send this to the owner’s mailing address.
