History of Seattle
The Seattle area was found to have been settled by Native Americans for over 4000 years, with evidence of 17 different settlements scattered across the area. The first European didn’t reach the Seattle area until 1792, and it was until 1851 before the area was formally claimed. In 1853, the area was split up into different sections to be settled and by 1865 the Town of Seattle became an officially recognized city by the Legislature of Territorial Washington. Seattle’s location at the mouth of the Duwamish River gave the city a significant economic advantage and became a center of industry and commerce for the entire state of Washington.
Seattle has had many periods of economic boom, starting with the lumber industry and then the most significant being the Klondike Gold Rush. There were also many extremely successful businesses founded in Seattle that are still around today. UPS was founded with a $100 loan and an idea from James E. Casey. Other companies that were founded around the same time and are still around today are Eddie Bauer and Nordstrom. As technology advanced, Seattle became an important manufacturing hub for aircraft and later, software. This is where much of the city’s current growth and reputation comes from.
One of Seattle’s most interesting exports is music. The city helped launch the careers of many famous jazz musicians with the countless number of jazz clubs up-and-down Jackson Street. Musicians like Ray Charles and Quincy Jones got their start from Seattle’s love affair with jazz. Ironically, Seattle was also the birthplace of the emotional alternative rock genre and subculture known as grunge popularized in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s. Bands like the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and most importantly, Nirvana; were all formed in Seattle. From the smooth sounds of saxophones to the grate of electric guitars, Seattle has made a significant impact on music over the course of the last 100 years.
Seattle is known as the Emerald City due to its beautiful, lush evergreen forests. Seattle is a fantastic destination for nature lovers, with its many winding pathways and hiking trails. Other than nature, Seattle is also home to many coffeehouses and roasteries, the most well-known being the ubiquitous Starbucks founded in 1971 in Seattle. Speaking of companies that play a huge part in our day-to-day lives, Seattle was also the birthplace of Amazon, Costco, and Microsoft, to name a few. Seattle has been the birthplace of so many important companies and things that we take granted, while also having a completely unique culture that makes it a fantastic place to visit and live!
