A Little About Seaford, Delaware!

Within a half-hour from the nearest beach, Seaford is a remarkable, charming Delaware city, voted the 28th Best Small Town in the United States.

Their motto is “rich in history with a focus on the future,” and it rings true within the close-knit community. One of the smallest cities in Delaware, but one of the largest cities in Sussex County, Seaford’s population is less than 8,000 people.

The city itself is named after a small town in England, courtesy of the courts of London that separated Maryland from Delaware in 1763. A vast majority of the current populous are locals with generations of Seafood legacy in their family heritage.

Regardless of its size, Seaford is one of the most historic locations in Delaware. It was once home to the Nanticoke Indians, situated alongside the Nanticoke River.

It’s been home to many celebrities, scientists, and a few famous criminals over the centuries. All of which you can see and learn about at the Seaford Museum.

The museum is housed in the old historic post office and exhibits artifacts from the Native Americans to modern times, all of which make up Seaford’s abundant history.

The Seaford Museum highlights the natural resources of the city, as well as the life and times of the Nanticoke Indians, how agriculture and textiles changed the city in the 21st century,

And how the introduction of the railroads caused a boom in population that stirred The War of Northern Aggression. Children 12 and under have free admission!

Other Historical Must-See Places in Seaford, DE

The War of Northern Aggression war a 1950s term that southern segregationists coined to the Northern efforts to end segregation.

It was a racist blowback that further defined the Mason/Dixon line, and all of that is prevalent and accounted for at the Ross Mansion and Plantation.

While slavery was abolished in 1865, segregation brought back talks of slave traders and their legacies. The Ross Mansion is one such legacy.

You can tour the old home of the former Delaware governor, Willian HH Ross, take a stroll through the Victorian cottage, and peak in at the log slave quarters.

The entirety of each building is furnished with authentic furniture from The Ross Family’s private collection.

The Patty Cannon House is another historic landmark that you are free to roam and learn about.

Patty Cannon was a horrible woman; an illegal slave trader and leader of the Cannon-Johnson Gang.

She and 60 people roved Maryland and Delaware for three decades, kidnapping, selling, and lynching African Americans that had been freed from slavery.

The Patty Cannon House is where she and her gang would meet, hold their captives, and even bury some of their dead in the grounds surrounding the house.

She was convicted of killing more than two dozen people, but only four bodies were found buried on the property.

Three of those were African American children.

Cannon died of a supposed suicide by poison while she was awaiting sentencing at her trial when she was near 70 years old.
