A Little About Little Rock, Arkansas!

Little Rock is the capital of the state of Arkansas. There are archeological artifacts that provide evidence of Native Americans inhabiting Central Arkansas for thousands of years before Europeans arrived, but it was incorporated by settlers in 1831.

Given its name from a rock formation along the river, named the "Little Rock," now, the city's population is almost 200,000. That may seem small for a capital city, but the six-county Little-Rock Metro area has a population of over 740,000.

The city is the headquarters of many notable brands such as Dillard's, Windstream Communications, Acxiom, Stephens Inc., the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Heifer International, Winrock International, the Clinton Foundation, and the Rose Law Firm. Other corporations, such as Amazon, and AT&T, are huge employers in this area.

Little Rock lies in the humid subtropical climate zone. This means there are extremely hot, humid summers, and cool winters. There is only a bit of snow, but this area has had temperatures as low as −12 and as high as 114 in the summer. You definitely get to experience all seasons.

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

Although it may seem like simply a high school, Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site was the site of struggles over school desegregation in 1957. This is the place where nine African-American teenagers entered their first day of school at a time when desegregation of the schools was just beginning.

This day went down in history and sparked part of the Civil Rights movement. Now, this school is still an active school, and you can go on a historic site tour.

Head Outdoors

Just over 15 miles of downtown Little Rock, Pinnacle Mountain stands tall. Head to the outdoors and enjoy one of two hiking trails leading to the summit. Here you can have incredible views, or go on one of the other many trails that lead to 2,500 acres of state park property.

You can even enjoy interpretive programs, boat launches, and picnic sites. There is no camping here, but you can go to one of the 100 campsites that can be found in Maumelle Park less than five miles away.

Get Some Class History

For the history buff, head to the Arkansas State Capitol. It is made of white marble and granite similar to the capital in Washington D.C, and the front entrance doors for the State Capitol are made of bronze. The cupola is covered in 24-karat gold leaf, which is incredible to see.

Explore the building and grounds on a scheduled tour. Popular public areas of the capital include the Governor's Reception Room, as well as Old Supreme Court Chamber, and a glistening rotunda.

Enjoy Art, Outdoors

The Wildwood Park is a park for music and the performing arts. It was designed for indoor and outdoor performances and offers 104 acres. The park also has a number of different gardens and smaller facilities,

but it is known for the Butler Arboretum. The arboretum contains daffodils and native flowering trees, while the neighboring Gertrude Butler Gazebo offers a daylily garden and views of Swan Lake.

A Different Kind of Museum

The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is something different from your average museum. Whether you are a navy member, or simply interested in the navy here you can check out a variety of different items. For example, check out two floating vessels involved in World War II,

a tugboat recognized as a Historic National Landmark, and a USS Razorback submarine that was present in Tokyo Bay. Jump into the operational submarine, learn about the inner workings, and or check out the memorial and peace garden.

Head to the River Market District

For the shopper or the explorer, River Market is a year-round market offering 10,000 square feet of shops, stalls, and tables. Here you can find different stalls that sell both food and unique products. With an open concept, the indoor areas even offer groceries and take-out options.

Head to the Arkansas River Trail when you are done to enjoy walking or biking. Be sure to try and stop in for one of the special events that occur at the River Market District throughout the year. Whether that is a big-name concert or Fourth of July fireworks over the river.

City Full of Surprises

Little Rock Arkansas is well known only for its name, but not for what it offers. With beautiful nature just a drive away, plenty of history, and exciting activities at every turn, it is no wonder this is a populated city in the midwest.

Enjoy fresh produce at the River Market District, or head to the maritime museum, this is truly a place to put on your radar and explore.
