History of Tucson
The Tucson area has been settled on-and-off for over 12,000 years, but it wasn’t until 1692 when Jesuit missionaries began to settle in the area. They founded the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1700. By 1775, the founder of the Tuscon we know today, constructed a military fort known as Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón. The city evolved from this fort eventually becoming known as Tucson, after it became a city in the state of Sonora after Mexico gained its independence from Spain.
The state of Arizona was later conquered by Confederate forces during the Civil War and became known as the New Mexico Territory lumped in with its neighboring states. During its years as a territory and early statehood, Tuscon became a railroad and industrial hub for much of the Southwest United States. This contributed to majority of Tucson’s growth and its current status as the second most populated city in Arizona.
If forests and everglades all look the same to you, Tuscon is a great place to mix it up and see the natural beauty that isn’t quite as friendly as you might be used to. Tuscon is located within the Sonoran desert, where millions of the iconic saguaro cacti grow. This desert is unique because it isn’t completely barren like the Saharan Desert in Africa but instead littered with millions of bushes, shrubs, and an endless variety of cacti. Tucson has so much to offer in unconventional, yet stunning natural beauty!
Other than the Sonoran Desert, Tucson has a booming and unique art scene that takes inspiration from the bright color palette of traditional Mexican art and architecture. Many parts of Tucson are influenced by Mexico, especially the food. Most of the food you will come across in Tucson will be delicious, traditional Mexican dishes, such as tamales, tacos, and tortas. But there is a unique flair to many of these dishes that make Southwest Mexican food its own thing. The addition of green salsas, fresh avocado, and black beans add a refreshing spin on some heavier traditional dishes. Whether you love nature, the food, or the arts; there is always something to do in The Old Pueblo.
