When our lives become hectic or busy we often forget to do the little things, like keep our car clean. We are constantly on the go, which means our cars can become our second home, and in the same way you value cleaning your home, you should embrace cleaning your car. It’s important that we keep our cars as clean and comfortable to travel in as possible. Clutter and mess provide unneeded stress and worry that you might not even know you’re suffering from.

So, take care of your car with these simple steps to keep your car clean.

Wash Your Car Once a Week

Washing your car is more important than you think. Generally, people wait up to a month or more before they get their car washed. Dust, filth, and dirt pile up on your car, which could eventually damage or harm the paint. For this reason, cleaning your car at least once a week will help maintain the look and paint job on your car.  Plus, you’ll never have to worry about the dread “Wash Me” mark that you see on cars in parking lots. Check out these DIY car washing tips from Progressive Insurance.

Wash Your Floor Mats

The floor mats in your vehicle easily get dirty from shoe debris collecting while we get in and out of the car. Luckily, there is an easy way to clean these mats. Vacuuming your mats will get all the loose dirt or dust particles that are settled on the surface. Although vacuuming will remove the big chunks of debris, you’ll still need to wash them. You can scrub the mat with soap and water in your sink and let the mat hang dry, or you can wash your car mats in the washing machine and hang dry. Either way, you’re using a simple and effective way to make sure your car mats stay clean and spotless!

Wipe Down Non-Glass Surfaces

Wiping down the non-glass surfaces in your car will help prevent an excess of dust from accumulating in the air in your car and will keep the surfaces of your car looking fresh and new. This is the quickest way to get your car looking, and smelling, better than the day you bought it. You can use wet wipes or a damp cloth in order to keep the dust off the hard surfaces in your car, like the center console, the dashboard, or the wheel. Since this only take a couple minutes, there’s no excuse for not keeping your car interior looking fresh.

Do Not Bring Food in the Car

This is a tough habit to break. It seems like eating in the car has become the norm for commuters, but it’s the simplest way to keep your car clean, and stop the accumulation of trash. Eating in your car not only causes a greater chance of spills, but it also leaves the smell of food lingering within your vehicle. Pre-plan your weekly lunches, so you’re not stopping through the drive-thru at noon, and wake up 20 minutes earlier than usual to eat your breakfast at home.

Keep a Trash Bag in the Car

Hanging a trash bag on the back of one of the seats will keep wrappers, papers, water bottles, and all the trash you accumulate in one easy to remove bag. At the end of the week, take the bag out and throw it away inside or in the nearest dumpster. Voila! Clean car. Cleaning your car isn’t a one and done procedure. Just like your home, you have to maintain and continually clean to keep your car in great shape.
