We all know that things can get messy, especially in your car. If your vehicle’s title has been the recent victim of a car mess and is damaged beyond repair, you’ll have to apply for a duplicate title.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles has a set protocol to follow if you find yourself needing a new title. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

You can apply for a duplicate title either through the mail, at a DMV Regional Office, or at a privately-owned license service that might be located in your local community. But first, you’ll need to fill out an Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft.

If there is a current lien on your vehicle, the duplicate title will be sent to the lienholder, so make sure you can provide documentation that you have satisfied any previous liens along with your application.

Make sure to bring your driver’s license and current registration card with you if you’re planning on submitting the affidavit in person. If you’re mailing it in, you’ll need to include a photocopy of both these documents with the application.

You’ll also need to pay the titling fee of $10.00.

Once you’ve finished the application, take it in to the office of your choice or mail it to the following address:

Receiving and Processing
PO Box 17710
Charleston, WV 25317

If you follow these instructions, you’ll be on your way to receiving a duplicate title before you know it!
