If you’re even considering selling your car in the Land of Enchantment, you’ll need to locate your title. If for some reason it’s gone missing or has been damaged while it’s been in your possession, you’ll need to get a duplicate.

It’s a fairly simple process to get a duplicate New Mexico title. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

The first step is to fill out the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title. You’ll need to have any and all legal owners of the vehicle sign this document, so be sure to have everyone present for this.

Note that a duplicate title is an exact replica of your original. If you’re needing a new title due to a name change or something of that nature, you’ll need to go through a different process.

You’ll need proof of identification with this application, so bring your driver’s license or mail in a copy with your application, if need be. They also ask that you send proof of your current registration, too.

If your vehicle originally had a lien that you have since satisfied, you’ll need to provide a Release of Lien. Otherwise, the duplicate title will be mailed to the original lienholder, which won’t be of much help to you.

Your duplicate title will be mailed to the owner’s address on record. If you would like it to be mailed to a different address, be sure to include a self-addressed envelope with your application.

There is a $5.00 titling fee that you can pay via check or money order.

Once your application is complete, you can mail off to:

Services Bureau
P.O. Box 1028
Santa Fe, NM 87504-1028
