History of Milwaukee
The name “Milwaukee,” originates from an Algonquian word meaning “pleasant land.” Many Native American tribes lived near the many waterways surrounding modern Milwaukee, mostly around Green Bay. As Europeans began interacting with the Native tribes of the area, the Native Americans were pushed further into the current Milwaukee area. The Milwaukee area was formally settled by three different founders who each founded their own towns. Tensions rose as each town began to grow, resulting in the Milwaukee Bridge War of 1845 that resulted in significant property destruction and injury of people from Kilbourn and Juneautown. In 1846, tempers had cooled and the city of Milwaukee was formed.
By 1900, 34 percent of Milwaukee’s population were people of Germanic descent that had fled from their homes to start anew away from the political turmoil at the time. These people were known as “Forty-Eighters,” in reference to the German Revolution of 1848. German culture had greatly influenced the overall culture of Milwaukee. This lead to the founding of Pabst Brewing Company in 1844 and Milwaukee’s association with beer and Germany.
Milwaukee has an extremely diverse population and Milwaukeeans embrace it wholeheartedly. While most know Milwaukee as “Brew City,” it’s also known as the “City of Festivals” due to its sheer number of cultural celebrations. Festa Italiana, Polish Fest, Oktoberfest, Irish Fest, and Mexican Fiesta are just a few of the festivals that are held annually in Milwaukee. The people of Milwaukee love to embrace the many cultures that have come together to create the beautiful and unique city they live in.
While Milwaukee isn’t known for its food, it definitely should be! Where it lacks in regional favorites, Milwaukee executes cultural classics like nowhere else! Pizza, pie, schnitzel, burritos, tacos; Milwaukee’s restaurants are some of the best examples of this common fare but taken to the next level! Milwaukee is an extremely diverse city that revels in their genuineness, acceptance, and uniqueness. No matter who you are, there is something for you in the great city of Milwaukee!
