History of Milwaukee

The name “Milwaukee,” originates from an Algonquian word meaning “pleasant land.” Many Native American tribes lived near the many waterways surrounding modern Milwaukee, mostly around Green Bay. As Europeans began interacting with the Native tribes of the area, the Native Americans were pushed further into the current Milwaukee area. The Milwaukee area was formally settled by three different founders who each founded their own towns. Tensions rose as each town began to grow, resulting in the Milwaukee Bridge War of 1845 that resulted in significant property destruction and injury of people from Kilbourn and Juneautown. In 1846, tempers had cooled and the city of Milwaukee was formed.

By 1900, 34 percent of Milwaukee’s population were people of Germanic descent that had fled from their homes to start anew away from the political turmoil at the time. These people were known as “Forty-Eighters,” in reference to the German Revolution of 1848. German culture had greatly influenced the overall culture of Milwaukee. This lead to the founding of Pabst Brewing Company in 1844 and Milwaukee’s association with beer and Germany.
