History of Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City has been the home of the Shoshone Native American tribe for thousands of years. European settlement didn’t occur until 1847 by the Latter-day Saints. This religious group was looking to escape persecution from people in the United States and moved westward to practice their religion freely. Only four days after arriving at the Salt Lake Valley, the leader of Latter-day Saints, Brigham Young, designated the building site for the Salt Lake Temple. As Salt Lake City and the surrounding area began to grow, conflicts began to arise as Young and his fledgling city and state sought statehood. The religious ideas of the Latter-day Saints conflicted with the traditional ideas represented in the United States which eventually led to the Utah War after Young refused to step down as governor.
The Utah War ended in 1890 when the Latter-day Saints abandoned specific beliefs that caused conflict with the United States government. After this, Utah became a state in 1896 and Salt Lake City became the state’s capital. Salt Lake City had issues with a declining population as people began to move to the surrounding metropolitan areas. From the 1990s to today, the population began to recover. Salt Lake City has a very diverse population and a blossoming LGBT community.
Salt Lake City Today
While cities like Portland and Austin pride themselves on their quirks and weirdness, Salt Lake City has its own brand of quirky that isn’t seen in the aforementioned cities. Salt Lake City has a campy quirkiness that seems to permeate even formal institutions. For example, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum has things like a two-headed lamb, a loaf of bread from 1893, and a cane made from the coffin of one of the founding members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, complete with some of his hair!
Salt Lake City has a diverse population which has led to a diverse influence of cultures. This shows the most in the food. You can get anything from legitimate Mexican puerco tacos, Korean bulgogi, Indian biryani, or Middle Eastern shawarma! This quirky city has a little bit of everything, making it a great place to live or visit!
