History of Albuquerque

Albuquerque has a long history, estimated to go back as far as 12,000 years ago when Paleo-Indian hunter-gatherers left petroglyphs in the basalt cliffs near modern-day Albuquerque. By the 1500s, 20 pueblos built by the Tiwa people were spread across the Rio Puerco, a nearby river. One of the most important is the Sandia Pueblo, where 427 native Tiwa people still live and speak their native language today. By 1706, the city of Albuquerque, as we know it today, was founded under the name, La Villa de Alburquerque, as part of the Mexican kingdom Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. Things really began to change and grow after the construction of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad in 1880.

As the population grew, Albuquerque became a gritty frontier town akin to those you’d see in the movies. The city went through another boom when Route 66 was built. People from all over began building businesses along the legendary road. This caused Albuquerque to become a sizeable city and economic hub for the state of New Mexico. The University of New Mexico was founded in the city in 1889, and in recent years has attributed to the growth of the dusty New Mexican town. The population has continued to grow throughout the 21st century and is now home to over 500,000 people.

Albuquerque Today

Much like many former frontier towns with long histories, Albuquerque respects and is inspired by the native people who lived there before. The dozens of pueblos in the area are still present there today. Tourists can go on a tour of ancient dwellings and see how the native people of New Mexico lived for hundreds of years. One of the most important distinctions of New Mexico that was inspired by the native people is the food.

One thing that people always remember when visiting New Mexico is the traditional Mexican-style food that dominates the tastebuds of Burqueños. Blue corn, tortillas made with corn, enchiladas, posole, and most importantly, red sauce and green sauce; makeup the staple cuisine of Burqueños and most New Mexicans. Albuquerque is an old city with ancient roots and a diverse population that has made it a truly unique place. Albuquerque not only respects its roots but celebrates them through their food and tourist attractions.
