Lexington was originally named after the Massachusetts Revolutionary War battle site. While Native Americans had already been in the area for a long time, it wasn’t permanently settled by European explorers until 1779. It was originally part of the state of Virginia. The city’s economy was largely agricultural, and horse farming quickly became part of the city’s identity. Today, Lexington is home to the Kentucky Horse Park and the International Museum of the Horse, as well as Keeneland and Red Mile, which are also notable horse racing courses.
Although Lexington is small, it has a very rich history, and that history has been well-preserved, with a number of historic sites in the area that are open to the public.
