A Little About Birmingham, Alabama!

With more than 212,000 people, Birmingham is Alabama's most populous city. The entire Birmingham metropolitan area has more than 1,150,000 people.

Birmingham's economy is quite active as it is a regional hub with ties to the Appalachian, Piedmont and Deep South regions.

Founded in the late 19th century amidst the post-Civil War era of reconstruction, Birmingham originally developed as a result of three farm towns merging together. Birmingham’s name is derived from a city with the same name in England.

In fact, Birmingham England was the second most populous industrial city in all of England at the time its sister city in the United States was officially named as such. The majority of Birmingham's early settlers stemmed from England.

History of Birmingham

The city was built on the back of poor laborers who lacked a union. The bulk of these immigrants were Italian and Irish yet some were also African-Americans who hailed from remote parts of Alabama.

Birmingham has served as an important industrial center of the country's southern region from its founding all the way through the mid-20th century. Though Birmingham is not exactly an industrial powerhouse today, it still has a bustling economy.

Birmingham's fast growth in the late 19th century and early 20th century inspired its nicknames of "The Pittsburgh of the South" and "Magic City." At the time, the city’s top industries were steel and iron production.

Birmingham also made the components used in the railroad industry ranging from railroad cars to rails. However, as time progressed, Birmingham's economy gradually diversified.

The steel mills eventually shut down and telecommunications, finance, electrical power transmission, insurance and transportation took over as economic drivers.

Today, Birmingham is ranked as one of the country's most important banking centers. Take a drive through Birmingham and you will find there is plenty of activity.

The city is home to the University of Alabama School of Medicine as well as the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Though few outside of Birmingham know it, this city is also home to three private colleges in Miles College, Samford University and Birmingham-Southern College. Be sure to check out a Southwestern Athletic Conference or Southeastern Conference college football, basketball or baseball game while driving through the area.

Birmingham is the headquarters for both of these powerhouse athletic conferences. Though the end of the industrial era was certainly a setback for Birmingham, an urban renewal effort took place in the city in the 1970s, highlighted by the development of the previously mentioned University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The city's downtown convention center is complete with a symphony hall and theater that seat 2,500 along with another 19,000 seat arena and several exhibition halls. Drive through Birmingham and you will find there are plenty of skyscrapers, many of which house the city's banking institutions.

Though these buildings have boosted the local economy, a considerable portion of those who previously lived in or near downtown has since relocated to adjacent suburbs throughout the 70s and in years since.

However, downtown Birmingham is in the midst of revitalization including the reconstruction of the central business district into a mixed-use district that has several businesses open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other words, you will have plenty to see and do when driving through downtown Birmingham and nearby areas.

Geography of Birmingham

If you are interested in hiking, head on over to the mountain ridges by Jones Valley. Fishermen rave about the nearby Black Warrior River.

If you run out of things to do, you can easily make a trip to Atlanta which is about a two hour drive to the west.

Regardless of what you choose to do in and around Birmingham, you will be able to enjoy your time in this world-class city without worrying about snow, sleet, rain or excessively cloudy days.

Though Birmingham receives the occasional rain shower and overcast skies, the vast majority of the days and nights in Birmingham are drama-free in the context of weather.

This is a warm, sunny and somewhat humid part of the country with comfortable temperatures throughout the entirety of the year.

However, Birmingham summers have the potential to reach triple digits on some days so be sure to bring along water, a hat and sunscreen so you can enjoy your downtown Birmingham experience without worrying about sunburn or dehydration.

Culture of Birmingham

Aside from checking out Birmingham's bustling business district, locals and visitors alike enjoy the city's cultural events. Local highlights include the Alabama Ballet, the Alabama Theatre, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Theatre and the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center.

The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex provides locals and tourists with a concert hall, a theater, a sports arena, a concert arena and exhibition halls.

Additional local entertainment venues include Pepper Place which has been designated as an official entertainment district, Samford University's Wright Center Concert Hall, and the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival.
